British Air Transport Auxiliary
Myrtle (Mikki) Allen Carter
Myrtle (Mikki) Allen Carter was an extremely well traveled 25-year-old when she applied for service in the British Air Transport Auxiliary. Allen had attended high school at the American School in Tokyo, Japan. When she applied with Jackie Cochran she had only a private license, although she was scheduled to take her Commercial written exams in a short time. She had logged only 325 hours of flight time. Mikki traveled to England with the sixth and last group of American women. She was in service to the ATA from August 1942 through February 1944. Mikki then returned to the United States, and as Cochran had promised, she took the opportunity to apply for service with the Women's Air Force Service Pilots. She went through WASP training in class 44-W-8.
