Winnie Pierce Beasley
Winnie Pierce Beasley was 25 years old with a Commercial pilots license when
she was recruited by Jackie Cochran to join the British Air Transport
Auxiliary. At the time of her application she had logged over 850 hours
of flight time. She had attended Wellesley College and held a B.A. degree.
Winnie traveled to England with the first group of American women in
March of 1942. She served with the Air Transport Auxiliary until May
1944.
She returned to the United States and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico
where she raised her family. She became a fixture of city lore when
she rode her motorcycle with a sidecar.
